While trying to decide how I could contribute in some manner to support our "Sistas" serving in the military overseas, I learned through the website www.anysoldier.com how difficult it is for "Sistas" to maintain their hair while deployed in such places as Iraq and Afghanistan. It was clear that they no longer had access to the “good stuff”, the critical products to manage our kind of hair. The Sister Soldiers were requesting hair care products from home more than any other single product. . . and by brand name!
I began by shipping to various Sister Soldiers any unopened hair care
products I had purchased for myself, then bought at retail the
specific brands they wanted and shipped to more "Sistas". Then I asked
members of my book club to donate similar products. Their support led
to group packing parties.
The fledging project resonated with so many women that in the first 18 months we sent these “care packages” to hundreds of Sister Soldiers, shipments that have already totaled over one ton of donated goods!
Most of us realize that without the “good stuff”, we are six to eight
weeks from not being able to get a comb through our hair. The Sister Soldiers Project makes it possible for families, friends, colleagues and anyone interested in the welfare of our Sister Soldiers, to send all the “good stuff” to these brave women in service to our country all over the world.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
